In 1982 Hartmut Ortlieb founded ORTLIEB Sportartikel GmbH in Nuremberg. The invention of the first ORTLIEB pannier arose out of the personal need to produce waterproof equipment for own purposes - because at that time there was none. The first ORTLIEB products were pack sacks and bicycle bags made of truck tarpaulin, sewn by hand and on mother's sewing machine, which Hartmut then tried out with his friends on their own bicycle and climbing tours. What began with simple means quickly developed into a success story.
ORTLIEB is characterized by hermetic closure systems such as roll closures, waterproof zippers, Velcro fasteners or sealing lips. Numerous equipment features are patented and continue to set new standards in the bicycle and outdoor market. The high-quality products with their inventive details arise from the ideas of the multidisciplinary team, which always has its ears on the market and thus with the increasing demands of users.
