I normally wear a size M - I bought a size L. The shirt is not tight in size L, but it is comfortable and not too big for me. If you are racing, you may need to get the smaller size. Despite the protective inserts, you can still move relatively well in the shirt. You can also wear it under a jacket if it is not particularly skin-tight. The knock-out argument, however, is that the shirt is not washable according to the instructions in the patch. If I had seen that before wearing it for the first time, I would have sent it back.
